This page explains how the category works in Shenzhen. District and market detail, price levels and named partners are published only once each has been verified in person; those sections are marked as pending rather than filled with estimates.
Overview — why Shenzhen for a health check
A comprehensive health check with imaging in Shenzhen costs a fraction of the equivalent in Hong Kong, London or New York, and an appointment is usually available within days rather than weeks. The examination itself takes half a day, typically two to three hours on site, and the results follow the traveller home.
The appointment is half a day; the remainder follows the traveller home. The examination takes a morning. The report is written over the following five to ten working days and delivered electronically, usually as a PDF through the provider's application or by email. This is standard at private and international hospitals, so a short visa-free stay presents no difficulty. Three points should be confirmed before paying: that an English version exists, since not every provider produces one by default and some charge for it; that the report is delivered electronically to an address accessible from home; and that the original DICOM imaging files can also be released. Without the images, a doctor at home can only read the summary, and some practitioners abroad discount reports they cannot verify.
Against self-pay private pricing in the United States or the United Kingdom the gap is considerably wider: full executive physicals in London or New York routinely run to several thousand dollars, against a few hundred here for comparable scope.
Where to go — types of provider
Public Grade-A (三甲)
The most authoritative results and direct referral into specialist care where something is found. Government-regulated standard pricing. Busier, with longer waits and a less comfortable environment. The appropriate choice where existing conditions are being monitored, or where the results need to be taken seriously by a doctor at home.
Private hospitals
Hotel-standard environment, English and Cantonese staff, faster reporting, private rooms and direct insurance billing at some. Pricier. The appropriate choice where comfort, language and speed matter more than price.
Chain checkup centres
Standardised, efficient and the least expensive — Meinian, Ciming, iKang and Rici, with hundreds of locations nationally. Well suited to a first or routine annual check. The reputation of the individual branch is worth verifying.

How to buy well — booking, preparation and the checks that matter
- How to book. Most providers accept bookings through their WeChat mini-program, their official site or by telephone. Several accept booking through Hong Kong health platforms that settle in Hong Kong dollars, which is useful where no mainland payment method is available.
- How far ahead. Chain centres frequently have next-day slots. International departments at public hospitals typically require two weeks or more.
- What to bring. Passport, booking confirmation, and a list of current medications together with any previous reports.
- Fasting. Eight to twelve hours before blood tests and abdominal ultrasound. Morning slots are standard, and a heavy meal the previous evening should be avoided.
- Duration. Expect two to three hours on site.
- Confirm the report before paying. An English version, electronic delivery to an address accessible from home, and release of the original imaging files.
- Confirm the item list. The package schedule should be read before signing rather than after the examination.

Common pitfalls
1. The inexpensive package is not the package assumed. Entry prices frequently cover only basic panels. Multi-site ultrasound, additional tumour markers and imaging are commonly added on the day, sometimes at considerable pressure. Confirm exactly which items appear in the schedule before signing, and treat in-room upselling with caution.
2. Acceptance of the report abroad. Some doctors outside China are cautious about reports from non-Grade-A or small centres. Where the results matter, use a Grade-A public hospital or an internationally affiliated private hospital, and request the original DICOM image files together with a bilingual written report.
- Assuming the report will be in English. Several providers produce one only on request, and some charge for it. Confirm before paying.
- Assuming the report arrives before departure. It generally does not. Plan for electronic delivery instead.
- Assuming insurance will cover it. Preventive screening without symptoms is excluded from most health insurance, including Hong Kong's VHIS. Some outpatient plans cover it as a wellness benefit, which should be checked rather than assumed. Hong Kong residents aged 65 and over can use Elderly Health Care Vouchers at a designated list of Greater Bay Area providers, including HKU-Shenzhen, Peking University Shenzhen and United Family.
- Booking an afternoon slot after eating. Fasting requirements make morning appointments the practical default.
Getting the results home
Report delivery. Reports are typically issued within five to ten working days as a PDF, delivered through the provider's application or by email. The delivery address should be one accessible from home, and the delivery method should be agreed before payment.
Imaging files. Request the original DICOM files in addition to the written report. A doctor at home can review imaging directly; a summary alone is frequently treated as insufficient.
Insurance and reimbursement. Where reimbursement is intended, obtain an itemised invoice in English and confirm the documentation requirement with the insurer before travelling.
Departure tax refund. The refund scheme applies to goods carried out of the country, not to medical services. A health check is not eligible, and the refund should not be included in the arithmetic for this category. Entry and stay arrangements are covered on the visa and tax refund page.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a full health check cost in Shenzhen?
A basic package at a public Grade-A hospital is quoted from approximately 800 to 1,500 yuan. Comprehensive packages including tumour markers and CT run 2,000 to 3,500 yuan. Private international hospitals with English reports begin around 2,400 yuan and reach 5,000 to 7,000 yuan for executive packages. Chain centres such as Meinian and Ciming quote below 400 yuan for a basic panel.
How long does it take to receive the results?
The appointment itself takes half a day, typically two to three hours. Reports take five to ten working days at most providers. This is the central planning point for a short stay: the traveller will usually have left China before the report is ready, so electronic delivery should be arranged in advance.
Do Shenzhen providers issue reports in English?
Several do. The University of Hong Kong Shenzhen Hospital and United Family Hospital issue bilingual Chinese-English reports, and private hospitals serving cross-border patients generally offer English. At public hospitals and chain centres the position should be confirmed in advance, and the original DICOM imaging files requested where a doctor at home is to review the scans.
Is fasting required before a health check in Shenzhen?
Yes. Blood tests and abdominal ultrasound generally require fasting for eight to twelve hours, so morning appointments are standard, and a heavy meal the previous evening should be avoided. Women scheduling gynaecological or pelvic ultrasound should avoid the menstrual period.
