Glasses in Shenzhen: the best-value thing you can buy here

Henggang, in Longgang district, is one of South China's optical manufacturing hubs — factories and wholesale networks sit directly behind the retail malls. Glasses here run 35–60% below downtown Shenzhen chains and 30–40% below Hong Kong, and single-vision pairs are usually ready within the hour.

This page explains how the category works in Shenzhen. District and market detail, price levels and named partners are published only once each has been verified in person; those sections are marked as pending rather than filled with estimates.

01

Overview — why Shenzhen for prescription eyewear

Henggang, in Longgang district, is one of South China's optical manufacturing centres: factories and wholesale distribution sit directly behind the retail malls. The practical consequence is that a complete pair — examination, lenses and frame — is assembled within a short distance of the production that supplies it. Prices typically run 35 to 60 per cent below the downtown Shenzhen optical chains and 30 to 40 per cent below Hong Kong, and a single-vision pair with a stock prescription is usually finished the same day.

Two features make this category unusually well suited to a short stay. The first is time: measurement, lens cutting and fitting are completed in hours rather than weeks, and the more complex work takes days rather than months. The second is scope: progressive lenses, high-index lenses for strong prescriptions and children's myopia-control lenses are all available within the same buildings, and several pairs are normally ordered in one visit without extending the appointment materially.

The qualification that matters is verification. The price advantage is realised only where the lens supplied is the lens specified, which is why the checks in section 04 are treated as requirements rather than suggestions.

Where to go — districts and optical malls

MallGetting thereBest for
Wangchao (王潮)Metro Line 3, Tangkeng station — the mall occupies the station's second levelNewest fit-out, fastest same-day service
Henggang (横岗)Line 3, Henggang station, approximately 600 m on footWidest selection, most factory-direct pricing
Jiabao (嘉宝)Line 3, Henggang station, exits C or DIndoor mall, many package-deal shops
Xinma (新马)Line 3, Henggang station, approximately 20 minutes on footWholesale-oriented, worth the walk for several pairs

Regular shops cluster on the second and third floors. Ground-floor stalls are where most of the problems are reported, and clients are generally advised to begin on the upper floors.

Those who prefer to remain central have alternatives. Huaqiangbei in Futian has optical shops with newer equipment at prices close to Henggang, and the Dongmen area in Luohu has a dense cluster of shops a few minutes from the Lowu crossing. Expect to pay somewhat more for the convenience.

To be completed. Confirmation of each mall's current trading status, floor-by-floor layout, opening hours including public holidays, and which metro exit leads most directly to the optical floors. 待填:各商场营业状态 / 楼层业态分布 / 营业时间 / 最近地铁出口

Price reference

Figures below are package prices quoted at Henggang counters and from published 2026 package lists. Henggang hosts more than a hundred shops across four malls, so these should be read as realistic ranges rather than quotations.

Budget tierTypical specificationPrice
Entry / spare pairDomestic 1.56 lens + TR90 or alloy frame$19¥128 – $45¥300
MainstreamMingyue or Kemi 1.60–1.67 + lightweight titanium frame$49¥329 – $63¥420
Branded lensEssilor A4 1.60 or Zeiss 1.60 with titanium frame$79¥529 – $90¥599
High prescriptionKemi U6 1.74 ultra-thin + pure titanium frame$69¥460

A useful detail: unless the prescription is very high, 1.71 lenses generally represent better value than 1.74 — lower chromatic aberration at roughly $15¥100 less. Shops rarely volunteer this.

How to buy well — specification, verification and timing

Three requirements prevent almost every problem reported in this category, and each of them takes a few minutes.

  • Verify the authorisation on paper. For Zeiss, Essilor, Hoya or Nikon lenses, ask to see the shop's paper certificate of authorisation. A screenshot on a telephone is not evidence. A shop without authorisation can still supply a lens carrying the brand's name; it simply will not be that brand's lens.
  • Watch the seal come off. The lens must be removed from unopened factory packaging in front of you and then scanned in the brand's official mini-program to generate an electronic warranty, before any cutting or fitting begins. This one step separates a genuine lens from a convincing imitation, and reputable shops perform it as standard.
  • Write the specification down before paying. Frame brand and model; lens brand, product line and refractive index; total price; and exactly what aftercare is included. Verbal quotations are where mid-process increases occur.

On the eye examination: a proper examination takes at least 15 minutes, and 30 minutes or more where astigmatism or a high prescription is involved. The better Henggang shops run 20 to 40 item visual function assessments comparable to hospital optometry. A prescription issued after five minutes will nonetheless be the prescription the glasses are built on.

Timing. Single-vision lenses with a stock prescription are finished in 30 to 60 minutes at most malls, and Wangchao advertises under an hour. Progressive lenses, 1.74 high-index lenses and any branded coating that has to be ordered take two to three days. Clients generally bring their current prescription: it allows the shop to cross-check its own measurement and indicates quickly whether the testing is careful. Ordering several pairs is normal and adds little time, including prescription sunglasses and a spare pair.

06

Common pitfalls

  • The bait price. A $13¥88 or $19¥128 sign outside, followed by an assertion that the lens is out of stock and will damage the eyes, and then a forced upgrade. Reputable shops do not do this; their entry packages are genuinely available at the advertised price.
  • Absent price tags. Frames without tags, and lenses quoted by brand but not by product line, mean the price is negotiable in one direction only.
  • Add-ons introduced mid-process. Once the lenses have been cut, the quotation is no longer negotiable.
  • Unbranded "Zeiss-quality" lenses. The term has no meaning. A lens is either authorised and scannable, or it is not.
  • Ground-floor stalls. The majority of reported problems originate there rather than on the upper floors.
  • A five-minute eye test. An inaccurate prescription produces an inaccurate pair, and no amount of craftsmanship in the laboratory corrects it.
07

Getting it home — aftercare, refund and customs

Aftercare. Terms at the better shops typically cover one year on domestic lenses, two years on imported branded lenses, lifetime free nose-pad adjustment, screw tightening and cleaning, and a free re-check within 30 days if the fit is uncomfortable. Have the terms written on the receipt.

Departure tax refund. Eyewear is a good, so the refund can in principle apply where the shop is an enrolled tax-refund store. In practice many optical counters at Henggang are not enrolled, so this should be confirmed before paying rather than assumed at the airport. Where it does apply, the minimum spend is per shop on the same day, the refund rate follows the tax rate applied to the goods, and the unified departure deadline of 28 days applies. Ask for the refund form and the original invoice at the point of purchase; neither can be issued afterwards. The visa and tax refund page carries the current figures.

Carrying. Glasses travel well and consume little luggage volume. For United States residents they count toward the 800 dollar personal exemption like any other purchase, and the exemption is a single pooled allowance across everything bought, so the total matters rather than each item individually. Several pairs including a high-end frame can approach it.

Shipping. A posted parcel enters as a commercial import and does not receive the traveller allowance. Given the size and weight of the goods, carrying them is normally the better route.

Frequently asked questions

How much do prescription glasses cost in Shenzhen?

At the Henggang optical malls a basic pair with domestic lenses and a frame is quoted from approximately 128 to 199 yuan. A mainstream package with a first-tier Chinese lens and a lightweight titanium frame runs 300 to 700 yuan. Branded imported lenses such as Zeiss, Essilor or Hoya with a titanium frame typically cost 500 to 900 yuan, which is roughly 35 to 60 per cent below the downtown Shenzhen chains and 30 to 40 per cent below Hong Kong.

How long does it take to have glasses made in Henggang?

Single-vision lenses with stock prescriptions are usually finished in 30 to 60 minutes, and some malls advertise under an hour. Progressive lenses, high-index 1.74 lenses and branded coatings generally take two to three days.

How can I confirm that the lenses are genuine?

Ask to see the shop's paper certificate of authorisation from the lens brand rather than a screenshot, have the sealed factory packaging opened in front of you, and scan the anti-counterfeiting code in the brand's official mini-program to generate an electronic warranty before any cutting or fitting begins.

Is the eye test at these malls reliable?

It varies. A proper examination should take at least 15 minutes for a standard prescription and 30 minutes or more where astigmatism or a high prescription is involved. Five-minute testing is a reason to leave. Reputable shops at Henggang run 20 to 40 item visual function checks comparable to hospital optometry.
