This page explains how the category works in Shenzhen. District and market detail, price levels and named partners are published only once each has been verified in person; those sections are marked as pending rather than filled with estimates.
Overview — why Shenzhen for dental treatment
Shenzhen dental pricing typically runs a quarter to a half of the levels charged in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia — a gap wide enough to cover the flights several times over. Private chains and international clinics in the city work to digital workflows including CBCT imaging and guided surgery, and report success rates above 95 per cent. Prices moved lower still after China's 2023 centralised implant procurement policy, with average reductions above 55 per cent on selected systems once the separation of technique and consumable pricing took full effect.
On time, the two principal treatments behave in completely different ways, and this is the point to settle before booking flights.
The two treatments are not the same shape.
- Clear aligners, for mild to moderate cases: one trip. Everything that requires the patient in the chair — scan, imaging, attachment bonding and the first trays — is completed in a few days in Shenzhen. Later aligner stages are shipped and progress is reviewed remotely. The model holds only under the three conditions set out in section 04.
- Implants: two trips. Surgery on the first visit, then three to six months of osseointegration before the permanent crown. A single implant cannot be compressed into one stay. A clinic that promises otherwise is performing immediate loading on ideal bone, or is not describing the full plan.
- All-on-4 and All-on-6: two trips, but the patient leaves with teeth. Suitable patients receive implants and a fixed temporary bridge on the same day. The temporary bridge is transitional; the permanent bridge is made after three to six months.
The main documented risks in this category are commercial rather than clinical: overtreatment at clinics close to the border crossings, and material substitution. Both are addressed by the same discipline — a written itemised quotation naming the implant system and the crown material, and a second opinion on any large plan.
Where to go — districts and clinic tiers
Shenzhen has three broad tiers. Public hospitals operate government-regulated standard pricing and cap service fees around $674¥4,500, but most foreign visitors pay out of pocket because they are not enrolled in Chinese social insurance, and an English-speaking clinician is not guaranteed at every appointment. Private chains publish package prices, accept international cards and run in-house dental laboratories able to produce restorations in three to five days. International clinics in Futian and Luohu offer English, Cantonese and sometimes Japanese or Thai coordination, and are organised for cross-border patients.
Convenience is a warning sign in this category. The heaviest sales pressure in Shenzhen sits within a few minutes of the Luohu and Futian checkpoints and is directed at same-day visitors from Hong Kong. Where a large treatment plan is presented at the first visit, a second opinion should be obtained before anything is signed.

The headline price is rarely the final price. A quotation of 799 dollars for an implant generally covers the scan, surgery, abutment and permanent crown, and excludes extraction, grafting, periodontal work and the temporary crown. Clinically necessary add-ons can double the account. Request an itemised written quotation, and ask specifically what happens if the examination changes the plan.
Comparison with treatment at home
| Treatment | Shenzhen | USA | UK | Australia |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single implant (Korean) | $799 – $1,100 | $2,500 – $4,000 | £1,800 – £2,200 | A$4,000 – A$5,000 |
| Single implant (Straumann) | $1,699 and up | $3,000 – $5,000 | £2,000 – £2,500 | A$5,000 – A$6,000 |
| All-on-4, per arch | $5,599 and up | $20,000 – $30,000 | £12,000 – £18,000 | A$23,000 + |
| Clear aligners, full course | $2,200 – $6,700 | $5,000 – $8,000 | £3,000 – £5,500 | A$6,000 – A$9,000 |
Even after two return flights and a week of accommodation, the arithmetic generally favours Shenzhen for anything above a single crown. International coordinators quote full aligner courses from approximately 2,200 dollars and mild cases from approximately 1,499 dollars. For comparison, Hong Kong private orthodontics typically runs 80,000 to 150,000 Hong Kong dollars for the same work, which is why the cross-border flow runs north rather than south.
How to buy well — planning, sequencing and the questions to ask
Questions to put to any clinic before committing
- Which implant system, in writing? Confirm the exact system and model before treatment begins, and ask to see the sealed packaging opened in front of you. Material substitution is the most frequently reported problem in this category.
- Does the treating dentist speak English, or only the coordinator? These are frequently different people. Ask directly.
- What is the refund position on work in progress? Where a multi-stage procedure is started and then stopped, recovering payment for completed stages is difficult. Choose the clinic before starting rather than after.
- What is the follow-up plan once the client is home? Some clinics offer teleconsultation or work with affiliated clinics in Hong Kong. Establish this before committing, not after a complication arises.
- Can the clinic issue an itemised English invoice and full treatment records? These are required if any part of the cost is to be claimed from overseas insurance.
Clear aligners: how the one-trip version works
Orthodontics appears to be the worst possible fit for a short visa window: treatment runs 12 to 24 months, and conventional schedules place the patient in the chair every six to eight weeks. That schedule exists because clinics default to dispensing a few stages at a time. A cross-border plan divides the process differently: everything that requires the patient in the room happens in one visit, and the remainder travels by post.
- Remote pre-assessment, before travelling. Photographs of the teeth are sent, together with any panoramic X-ray or existing scan already held. The clinic advises whether aligners suit the case and issues a written quotation. This is planning rather than diagnosis; the plan is final only after an in-person scan.
- First visit in Shenzhen — a few days. Full imaging and digital scan, sign-off of the treatment plan with the simulated tooth movement shown before agreement, attachment bonding, and fitting of the first set of trays.
- Treatment at home. Later stages are shipped. Trays are changed on schedule and progress photographs are uploaded for remote review.
- Optional final visit for refinement scans or retainers, or handled locally.
Three conditions. Where a clinic omits any of them, the plan should be declined.
- The first visit must include full imaging. A panoramic X-ray, a lateral cephalogram, a CBCT scan and an intraoral scan. A clinic that quotes without imaging is removing the step that reveals root position, bone level and bite relationship — the details that determine whether movement is safe at all.
- Arrange a local dentist or orthodontist at home before starting. This is not optional. The United States Food and Drug Administration states that while some treatment plans include remote monitoring and virtual visits, periodic in-person visits can help reduce the risks of an uneven bite, unintended tooth movement, pain and tooth loss, and confirm that treatment is progressing appropriately. Remote monitoring supplements in-person review; it does not replace it.
- The case must genuinely be mild or moderate. Suitable: mild to moderate crowding, spacing, and mild relapse after teenage orthodontics. Not suitable: skeletal discrepancies, significant crossbite, impacted teeth, active gum disease, and cases requiring extractions or anchorage screws. Those require in-clinic orthodontics, and a clinic that agrees to treat them remotely is not doing the patient a favour.
Confirm what "all-inclusive" covers. A proper package bundles the diagnostics, the plan, the full aligner set and routine review visits. Standard exclusions are extractions, anchorage screws, periodontal treatment and retainers. Some packages include one refinement round and others charge for it, so the review-visit limit should be obtained in writing.
Timeline
| Case | Total duration | Trips needed |
|---|---|---|
| Clear aligners, mild to moderate | 6 – 18 months | 1 (+ local check-ups at home) |
| Clear aligners, complex or extraction case | 18 – 24 months | Multiple |
| Single implant, good bone density | 3 – 6 months | 2 |
| Implant with grafting or sinus lift | 5 – 9 months or more | 2 – 3 |
| All-on-4 / All-on-6 full arch | 3 – 6 months to final bridge | 2 — but teeth on day one |
A typical implant first trip runs five to seven days: consultation and CBCT scan, pre-operative tests, surgery of 30 to 60 minutes, and suture removal at seven to ten days. Many clinics can compress the surgical stage into a long weekend where the scan has been arranged remotely in advance.
Immediate loading: who actually qualifies
Same-day teeth appear to solve the two-trip problem, and for full-arch cases they largely do — but the gate is narrow. Clinics assess:
- Bone density and volume. Typically D1 to D3, with sufficient height and width for primary stability.
- Insertion torque of approximately 35 Ncm or higher. This is the working threshold for immediate loading. Below approximately 30 Ncm, standard healing is used instead.
- Controlled systemic health. HbA1c below 7 per cent, blood pressure managed, no acute infection at the site.
- Non-smoker, or willing to stop. Smoking materially impairs osseointegration.
Common exclusions include uncontrolled diabetes, kidney dialysis, long-term bisphosphonate use, severe untreated bruxism and pregnancy. The temporary bridge is transitional — soft food only at first, with the permanent bridge made after three to six months.
Practical arrangements. Private chains accept telephone, WhatsApp or WeChat appointments and often operate six or seven days a week. Public-hospital specialists typically need one to two weeks' notice through the hospital's WeChat account or the city health platform, and generally do not accept walk-ins for non-emergency dental care. Private clinics accept international cards, Alipay and WeChat Pay, and an itemised English receipt should be requested at the time of payment.

Common pitfalls
- Large treatment plans presented at the first visit near a border checkpoint. This is the pattern most associated with overtreatment. Obtain a second opinion before signing.
- Material substitution. Where the implant system or crown material is not named in writing, the specification can change after payment. Confirm the system and ask to see the sealed packaging opened.
- Headline quotations that exclude the necessary work. Extraction, grafting, periodontal treatment and temporary crowns are frequently outside the advertised figure.
- Coordinator English mistaken for clinician English. The person who answers the enquiry is not necessarily the person who treats. Ask directly who will perform the procedure.
- Remote-only aligner monitoring. A shipped set of aligners treated as a self-managed product is the pattern most associated with reported complications.
- No refund position on work in progress. Where a multi-stage procedure is abandoned partway, recovering payment for completed stages is difficult.
- Assuming a single trip suffices for implants. Biological healing cannot be compressed, and a clinic that suggests otherwise is either loading immediately on ideal bone or withholding part of the plan.
Not medical advice. The figures and descriptions on this page are published price ranges and process outlines, not clinical recommendations. Suitability depends on individual imaging and history: obtain a proper assessment and a second opinion on any large plan.
After treatment — records, insurance and follow-up
Records to take home. Request an itemised English invoice, the treatment record, the prescription details and the original imaging files. A dentist at home can act on imaging far more confidently than on a summary, and some practitioners abroad place limited weight on reports they cannot verify.
Insurance. Where any part of the cost is to be claimed from overseas insurance, the itemised invoice and treatment records are required at the time of the claim rather than afterwards. Confirm the documentation requirement with the insurer before travelling.
Departure tax refund. The refund scheme applies to goods carried out of the country, not to clinical services. Dental treatment is not eligible, so the refund should not form part of the arithmetic for this category.
Follow-up. Establish the follow-up arrangement before treatment begins: whether the clinic offers teleconsultation, whether it works with an affiliated clinic in Hong Kong or elsewhere, and who would manage a complication after departure. Combining treatment with the rest of the itinerary is straightforward: the main dental clusters sit in Luohu, Futian and Nanshan, and Huaqiangbei is close by. A morning appointment followed by an afternoon in the electronics markets is an ordinary day in Shenzhen.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a dental implant cost in Shenzhen in 2026?
Published private-clinic ranges run from approximately 1,800 yuan for a domestic implant system to 20,000 yuan for a premium Swiss system, with Korean systems such as Osstem and Dentium typically between 2,800 and 8,000 yuan. Quotations issued by international coordinators begin near 799 US dollars for a Korean implant including abutment and crown. Bone grafting, sinus lift and temporary crowns are usually excluded.
Can a dental implant be completed in one trip to Shenzhen?
Usually not. A standard single implant requires two visits: five to seven days for assessment and surgery, then a healing period of three to six months before the permanent crown is fitted. The partial exception is All-on-4 or All-on-6 full-arch treatment, where suitable patients receive implants and a fixed temporary bridge on the same day and travel home with teeth. The temporary bridge is not the final one; the permanent bridge is made after three to six months of osseointegration.
Can clear aligners started in Shenzhen be finished at home?
For mild to moderate cases, yes. Clinics in Shenzhen can complete the examination, CBCT scan, digital scan, treatment plan and attachment bonding in one visit of a few days, then ship later aligner stages with remote review. Three conditions apply: the first appointment must include full imaging; a local dentist or orthodontist should be arranged at home for in-person review every six to eight weeks; and the case must genuinely be mild or moderate rather than a complex bite or skeletal case.
Is remote aligner monitoring without any in-person review safe?
No. The United States Food and Drug Administration states that while some treatment plans include remote monitoring and virtual visits, periodic in-person visits help reduce the risk of uneven bite, unintended tooth movement, pain and tooth loss, and confirm that treatment is progressing. Treating a shipped set of aligners as a self-managed product is the pattern most associated with reported complications.
Is dental treatment in Shenzhen safe for international patients?
Private chains and international clinics in Shenzhen use digital workflows including CBCT imaging and guided surgery, and report success rates above 95 per cent. The main documented risks are commercial rather than clinical: aggressive treatment plans at clinics near the border crossings, and material substitution. Obtain a second opinion and a written itemised quotation naming the implant brand and the crown material.
