Gold in Shenzhen: how Shuibei prices it, and how to check it

Shuibei, in Luohu district, is one of the largest gold and jewellery trading clusters in China, with refining, wholesale and retail counters within a few streets of one another. The attraction is not a discount but a pricing method: metal is charged by weight against a published benchmark, and the fabrication fee is quoted separately and openly.

01

Overview — why Shenzhen for gold and jewellery

Gold is a commodity, and the metal component of a purchase costs broadly the same wherever it is bought. What differs is the fabrication charge and the retail margin on top of it. Shuibei concentrates fabricators, wholesalers and retailers in one district, so the workmanship fee is set in a competitive market rather than inside a shopping-mall jewellery counter where rent and branding are carried in the price of every gram.

The convention here is worth understanding before arrival. Plain gold is quoted by weight, with the metal priced against a benchmark that moves daily and a workmanship fee added per gram. Because the two components are stated separately, a buyer can calculate what is being paid for the metal and what is being paid for the making. That transparency is the real advantage of the district, and it is also why a visitor who does not ask for the two figures separately loses most of the benefit.

Three product lines sit in the district and behave differently. Plain fine gold, sold by weight, is the most straightforward and the easiest to verify. Karat gold and set jewellery carry design and stone value, and are quoted on a different basis. Gemstones, jade and pearls are priced per piece rather than by weight, and depend entirely on grading and disclosure. The checks appropriate to one line are not sufficient for another.

Price reference

Price levels are published only after they have been quoted at the counter and recorded with the date. The structure below shows how a quotation is built, so that the filled table can be read correctly.

ComponentHow it is calculatedFigure
Benchmark gold pricePublished reference for the day, per gram$—¥—
Workmanship fee, plain goldQuoted per gram, varies with construction$—¥—
Workmanship fee, complex designQuoted per gram or per piece$—¥—

How to buy well — specifications, verification and checks

Ask for the two components of the price separately. For a plain gold piece, request the day's benchmark gold price per gram, the weight of the piece, and the workmanship fee per gram. A counter that states these without hesitation is telling you that the price is constructed rather than invented. A counter that offers only a single total is asking to be trusted, which is not the basis on which to buy a commodity.

  • Watch the weighing. The piece should be weighed in front of you on a certified scale, and the weight should appear on the receipt. Ask whether the weight includes any clasp or attached component.
  • Check the purity stamp. Fine gold at 999 parts per thousand is the standard for plain gold here; eighteen-carat gold is a different product with a different basis. Confirm that the stamp on the piece matches the purity written on the receipt.
  • Calculate the implied cost per gram. For any piece quoted as a single fixed figure, divide by the weight and compare against the benchmark plus a normal workmanship fee. This is the only way to compare a fixed-price piece against a weighed one.
  • Obtain a certificate for stones. For gem-set pieces, request a certificate from a recognised gemmological laboratory, match the certificate number to the stone, and ask directly whether the stone is natural, treated or laboratory-grown.
  • Ask about exchange and buy-back terms in writing. Exchange schemes are common, and the terms that matter are the purity credited, the fee charged on exchange, and whether the credit must be spent in the same shop. Ask before paying, not after.
  • Itemise the receipt. Description, purity, weight, benchmark used, workmanship fee, total, and the shop name. An itemised receipt is also the document an assay office and a refund counter will ask for.

The pieces that hold value best are the plain ones, because the metal component is recoverable and the fabrication charge is small. Highly worked designs carry a fee that is not recovered on resale, which is a reasonable thing to pay for a piece you intend to wear and a poor thing to pay for a piece bought as a store of value.

Common pitfalls

  • Fixed-price gold without a weight comparison. A single figure is not necessarily poor value, but it cannot be assessed until the implied cost per gram is calculated. Where the gap against the benchmark is wide, the premium is for design and is generally not recoverable.
  • Weight that does not match the receipt. Insist on seeing the scale reading and on having the same figure written down. A discrepancy here is the most consequential error in the category.
  • Purity confusion. Fine gold, eighteen-carat gold and gold-plated or gold-filled items occupy the same display cases. Ask which one is being sold, and check the stamp.
  • Undisclosed stone treatment. Dyed jade, glass-filled material and laboratory-grown stones are sold alongside natural ones. Disclosure is frequently not volunteered, so ask directly and have the answer written on the receipt.
  • Exchange schemes that restrict value. An exchange credit confined to one shop, or calculated at a rate below the metal content, is worth less than it appears. Understand the terms before relying on them.
  • Non-itemised receipts. A receipt showing only a total gives nothing to verify at home, at an assay office, or at a refund counter.
  • Carrying value insecurely. This is a high-value, low-volume purchase. It belongs in hand luggage, not in a checked bag.

Getting it home — tax refund, declaration and customs

Departure tax refund. Enrolment in the refund scheme varies counter by counter, so it should be confirmed before paying rather than assumed. Where it applies, the minimum spend is calculated per store on the same day, the refund rate follows the tax rate applied to the goods, and the unified departure deadline applies. Request the refund form and the original invoice at the point of purchase, and keep the goods available for inspection at the port. Shenzhen operates six refund ports, including four land crossings, so departure overland to Hong Kong to fly onward does not forfeit the claim. The current figures are set out on the visa and tax refund page.

Declaration at home. Gold and jewellery acquired abroad fall within the traveller allowance of the country of residence and are dutiable above it. The treatment depends on the destination's own rules and on the declared value, and the certificate and invoice are the documents an officer will ask for. Keeping both is not optional, because a certificate is also the only evidence of purity and stone identity once the piece has left the district.

Transport. Carry the purchase in hand luggage, keep the certificate separate from the item in case of loss, and check whether the travel insurance policy covers jewellery and precious metal at the value involved, since standard limits are frequently lower than the purchase.

Shipping. Sending precious metal or gemstones by post is generally inadvisable: carriers restrict or exclude the category, insurance is limited, and a parcel does not receive the traveller allowance in any event. Carrying is the appropriate route for this category in almost every case.

Frequently asked questions

How is gold priced at Shuibei?

Plain gold is quoted in two parts: the metal, priced by weight against the benchmark gold price of the day, plus a workmanship or fabrication fee charged by the gram. The benchmark moves daily, so the same piece costs a different amount on a different day. Ask for both parts separately, and ask which benchmark the shop is using, because transparency on the two components is what makes the price verifiable.

What does 足金 mean, and how do I check purity?

足金 denotes fine gold at 999 parts per thousand, and it is the standard for investment-style plain gold in China. Eighteen-carat gold is a different product with a different price basis. Check the purity stamp on the piece itself, confirm the figure on the receipt, and for a significant purchase arrange an independent assay rather than relying on the stamp alone.

Should I buy fixed-price gold pieces?

Fixed-price pieces, quoted as a single figure rather than by weight, are common and are not necessarily bad value, but the implied cost per gram has to be calculated before the comparison is meaningful. Divide the price by the weight and compare the result against the day's benchmark plus a normal workmanship fee. Where the gap is wide, the premium is for design and is generally not recoverable on resale.

How do I buy gem-set jewellery safely?

Ask for a certificate from a recognised gemmological laboratory and match the certificate number to the stone, since treatments and synthetics are common and disclosure is not always volunteered. Ask specifically whether the stone is natural, treated or laboratory-grown, and have the answer written on the receipt rather than given verbally.

Can I claim the departure tax refund on gold?

The refund applies only at stores enrolled in the scheme, and enrolment varies counter by counter, so it must be confirmed before paying. The minimum spend is calculated per store on the same day, the refund rate follows the tax rate applied to the goods, and the unified departure deadline applies. Request the refund form and the original invoice at the point of purchase.

Planning a gold or jewellery purchase in Shenzhen?

I am based in Shenzhen and work with visitors from the planning stage through to departure. I research the district and current price structure in advance, arrange the route by category and number of days, and accompany clients at the counter to confirm weight, purity, certification and the itemised receipt. Fees are quoted individually, based on the length of the day, the categories involved and the amount of preparation required. You will receive a written quote before anything is confirmed.
